The Soviet Union, at the outbreak of war with the axis powers, was a vast land of under-exploited resources and possessed a recently purged military with little modern training or leadership. Despite the speed and brutality of Hitler’s advance, the vastness of Soviet possessions and a long winter allowed Stalin time to turn things around. While in military thought they never quite caught up to the rest of the world, the Soviets were masters of applying massive forces along a minimal frontage. Combined with some of the more effective tank and artillery designs, this allowed the Red Army to turn the tides of war in the east.
During the war no two combined nations enlisted(or lost) as many men as the USSR, who absorbed 50% of the total world casulties during the war. However, due to a lack of functioning ports and naval bases, the Soviet navy was undermanned and relatively weak.
